The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in coordination with the African Mathematical Union (AMU), CIMPA, CoRE-Math, and the International Science Programme (ISP), has announced the 2026 School on Arithmetic, Geometry and Algorithms. The event is scheduled to take place from August 17 to 28, 2026, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Scientific Focus The school’s curriculum centers on arithmetic and algebraic geometry, specifically focusing on computational aspects, modern algorithms, and practical applications in fields such as cryptography and coding theory. The program is designed to provide foundational instruction in:

  • Commutative algebra and the language of modern algebraic geometry.
  • Algebraic varieties and Number Theory.
  • Elliptic curves and their geometry over finite fields.
  • The implementation of computer algebra systems as research tools.

Instructional Faculty Confirmed speakers and their respective topics include:

  • S. Nakato (Kabale University): Introductory Commutative Algebra
  • S. Gammelgaard (Università degli Studi di Milano): Introductory Algebraic Geometry
  • A. El-Guindy (Cairo University): Algebraic Number Theory, Finite Fields, and RSA Cryptography
  • D. Festi (University of Naples Federico II): Geometry and Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves
  • J. Duque-Rosero (Boston University): Elliptic Curves over Finite Fields and Cryptographic Applications

Additional lectures will be provided by faculty from Addis Ababa University and Dilla University.

Logistics and Applications The school is open to applications until April 1, 2026. There is no registration fee for the event. To support attendance, a limited number of grants are available, with the organizing committee noting that priority will be given to participants from developing countries.

The organizing committee includes representatives from the University of Vienna, Uppsala University, the University of Amsterdam, and the University of Groningen, alongside local organizers from Addis Ababa University.
